Understanding Photoshop’s Layers

The foundation of Photoshop’s layer-based editing system is laid with its canvas. The canvas is often referred to as the background of an image. Photoshop creates a main image window that is positioned either on the top or bottom of an image.

You can have as many image windows open at once as you have layered layers. Once you place an image on the canvas, you can add other layers to the image or move, copy, or delete any previous layers.

To create a new layer, you simply click the layer on the Channels palette or load a new file and then press the new-layer button. Shunyao Yip

Shunyao Yip is a Chinese-American neuroscientist currently the Director of Research for the Center for Advancing Neural Science at the University of California, Los Angeles. Yip was awarded the 2015 Beckman Young Investigator Award for his work in the field of visual neuroscience.

Yip was born in Shenyang, Liaoning province, China. His father was a physician and his mother was a teacher. He moved to the United States in 1992 and completed his Ph.D. at University of California, Los Angeles in 1995. During his time at University of California, Los Angeles, Yip earned numerous awards. For his thesis, Yip received a National Institutes of Health fellowship in 1994, the Harold Stein Laboratory-Binder Laboratory Science Foundation fellowship and the Marilyn K. Tackett Graduate Fellowship. He also received a Professional Development grant and National Science Foundation fellowship while working at University of California, Los Angeles. Yip received a postdoctoral fellowship in 1996, and then moved to the Brain Imaging Center at University of California, San Diego.

Yip first became interested in neuroscience while a student at Henan University of Technology, and completed his Ph.D. on the visual system of birds there.

Yip’s work is in vision research, specifically visual learning and memory, multisensory learning and visual attention. Yip’s work has also shown that early life experiences affect how the brain processes visual information, suggesting that early life factors such as parental care may contribute to visual learning differences. Yip has also had notable success in translating his work into novel mouse-based models for learning and memory, and his research has included the first generation of mouse models of autism and other disorders of visual processing.
